The project is firewall toolkit, an open source framework to create firewall appliances. It is *not* a packet filter frontend (it does not even include a packet filter, you may use your favorite), It is *not* a gui to manage a bunch of poorly integrated components (actually we do not have a gui at all at the moment and it is the thing we need). It is *not* an operating system distribution (it runs on anything that looks like a decent Unix system).

It is capable of inspecting (and doing it quite well) http, https (with better certificate validation than browser can do, and we can stop malware coming via https passing it to an external filter), ftp, smtp, pop3, nntp, cvs, lpd, telnet and more.
What we need is:
GUI
Live CD
"Embeddable" build for OpenWRT and alikes
SELinux profile
XML filter not based on something big like libxml2
Better html filter
Basic WAF functionality
Instant messaging proxies
VoIP proxies
imap4 proxy (yes, i know it is close to impossible to implement properly)
Better authentication backends
and your other ideas.
The current project home is https://sourceforge.net/projects/openfwtk/ , but i am willing to move it here if it works better.
